First Days, the official journal of the American First Day Cover Society, won a gold medal at the Chicagopex literature competition in November. Under the direction of late editor Al Starkweather, the magazine received golds in every literature competition in which it was entered during his six-year tenure.

Starkweather passed away one week before the competition at the age of 81.
